Ariz. Police Arrest 2 in Shootings Case
Authorities arrested two men Friday in their investigation of a series of shootings that have terrorized people throughout the Phoenix area, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press.
Several law enforcement agencies, including the Phoenix police department were involved in the arrests at a Mesa apartment complex, according to the source, who said more information would be released later in the day.
Earlier, authorities searched an apartment building and said they had made a break in a major investigation. Authorities had declined to say whether the search was related to the ongoing hunt for two serial killers believed to be responsible for more than a dozen slayings in the area.
The Phoenix Police will be holding a News Conference later today (10 a.m. pacific time) The Azcentral reports: 2 in custody in 'Serial Shooter' case
Investigators from an interagency police task force took two suspects into custody in the "Serial Shooter" case, officials said early Friday.
The case has held the Valley in a grip of fear for more than a year, with six people killed and 18 wounded. The shootings began in May 2005. The latest shooting was Sunday night when a 22-year-old woman was shot to death while walking on Gilbert Road near Grandview Street in Mesa.
Early Friday, Mesa, Phoenix, and Scottsdale police along with FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents were at the Windscape Apartments on McKellips Road near Mesa Drive searching at least one apartment.
Police took various items from the apartment during the course of the morning, including what appeared to be rifles in clear plastic cases.
A tow truck appeared at the apartments about 4 a.m., and about a half hour later a silver, later model Toyota Camry was towed away.
The Serial Shooter case is one of two serial attacker cases being investigated in the Valley. The Baseline Killer has shot to death eight people and been involved in sexual assaults and robberies since last August. Police still are asking for the help of the public in that case.
Early Friday, the two suspects in the Serial Shooter case were being questioned by police. They were expected to be taken to a Maricopa County jail later in the morning, officials said.
