SENATE PASSES HATCH'S SEX OFFENDER BILL
Washington – The U.S. Senate today passed by unanimous consent the “Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act” (S. 1086), sponsored by Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah). This is the first piece of national legislation specifically designed to protect children from sexual predators.

“Sex offenders represent a clear and present danger to our nation’s most precious natural resource: our children,” Hatch said. “Those who break such a sacred trust and harm our children, no matter who they are, where they are from, or where they commit their crime, will have obligations under this law to make their whereabouts known or subject themselves to jail time.”

Once approved, Hatch’s bill will create a national database and require convicted sex offenders to register their whereabouts every month in person. Failure to comply would be a felony. Existing sex-offender sites are managed from state to state, and do not correspond with each other. Under current law, convicts are required to register usually only once per year, by mail, and failure to comply is only a misdemeanor. The bill also authorizes funding for tracking devices on sex offenders.

“Sexual predators are monsters, and many use the Internet to hunt our children,” Hatch said. “It is high time we started using the web to hunt the sex offenders.” Sen. Hatch’s Press Release-Full Story

UPDATE: Victory!! The Children's Safety Act Passes The Senate
It's the announcement that John Walsh has been waiting to make for more than two years: The United States Senate has passed The Children's Safety Act!
On Thursday afternoon, May 4, 2006, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist called John to personally tell him that the political maneuvering that had long stood in the way of the bill's passage had been resolved, and that a vote was imminent. Shortly after that, senators voted to approve this important legislation to toughen sex offender registries and protect our children from dangerous predators.
John hailed the vote, calling the Children's Safety Act "the most important children's legislation in the past 25 years." Full Story at America's Most Wanted click here - Victory!! The Children's Safety Act Passes The Senate

I do wonder though what changed Senator Ted Kennedy's mind about this Child Protection Bill!!! He managed to keep it from being past for two (2) years. Senator Reid said 'night before last' that he would knock it off, but Kennedy was still holding out. Then last night at the last minute Kennedy backed off.....perhaps it was because of his knowledge of Patrick Kennedy and his cover-ups and/or Bill O'Reilly announcing he was going to hound Ted Kennedy until he knocked it off. Humm...sure makes you wonder. Whatever the reason, this is so overdue but THANK GOD it is now past. Our President should sign it very quickly. HURRAY for the CHILDREN!!!!!!
